VOCABULARY 5C by Alvaro


To get on: to make progress; proceed; advance.
It’s impossible to get on with the same old methodology.

To light (lit): to set burning, as a candle, lamp, fire, match, or cigarette; kindle; ignite.
Would you light my cigarette please?

To add:
1. To unite or join so as to increase the number, quantity, size, or importance
2. To find the sum of (often fol. by up). To perform the arithmetic operation of addition
3. To include (usually fol. by in)
You need to add some water to get the right consistency.

Extinction (n): The fact or condition of being extinguished or extinct.
The destruction of our forests causes has caused the extinction of a lot of animal species.

Extinct (adj): No longer in existence; that has ended or died out.
The golden frog is an extinct species in Monteverde.

Disreputable: not reputable; having a bad reputation.
He is known as a disreputable person on public charges.

Subsidy: A sum paid, often in accordance with a treaty, by one government to another to secure some service in return. A grant or contribution of money.
The public employees have got a subsidy from the government.

To subsidise: To furnish or aid with a subsidy.
Private employees would love to be subsidised by the government.

Reluctantly: describe disinclination toward something. Reluctant implies some sort of mental struggle, as between disinclination and sense of duty.
He’s usually reluctant to accept his mistakes.

To graze: to feed on growing grass and pasturage, as do cattle, sheep, etc
Some people said that dogs use to graze when they have stomachache.

To boil down to sth: to be simplifiable or summarizable as; lead to the conclusion that; point.
You need to boil down the document to a more understandable one.

Leaning: inclination, tendency.
I’m looking forward to see the Leaning Tower of Piza.

Night-duty: an action or task required by a person's position or occupation; function at night.
The night-duty of doctors in hospitals is very exhausting.

Materialistic: A person who is markedly more concerned with material things than with spiritual, intellectual, or cultural values.
Materialistic people are slaves of money.

Mugger: one who assaults a person in order to rob him or her.
The mugger was caught by the police two weeks after the mugging

Perjury: the willful giving of false testimony under oath or affirmation, before a competent tribunal, upon a point material to a legal inquiry.
He was accused of committing perjury.

Oath: the form of words in which such a statement or promise is made.
The defendant swore an oath before beginning the judgment.

Bribery: the act or practice of giving or accepting a bribe
The politician was accused of bribery to get the planning permission

To bribe: money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupting the behavior of a person
Some investors try to bribe architects and engineers to develop projects without permissions.

To be guilty of doing sth:
1. Responsible for a reprehensible act; culpable
2. Having committed an offense, crime, violation, or wrong, esp. against moral or penal law; justly subject to a certain accusation or penalty; culpable.
The gang was found guilty of stealing cars.

Obsolete: no longer in general use; fallen into disuse
Laptops get usually obsolete in technology after a year of use.

Arsonist: a person who commits arson
The police haven’t found the arsonist who burned the deserted factory.

Arson: The crime of maliciously, voluntarily, and willfully setting fire to the building, buildings, or other property of another or of burning one's own property for an improper purpose, as to collect insurance.
I hope that man goes to jail for all the arson that he has committed.

To pour: to send (a liquid, fluid, or anything in loose particles) flowing or falling, as from one container to another, or into, over, or on something.
You have to pour the milk into the pot with boiling water.

Border:
1. The part or edge of a surface or area that forms its outer boundary.
2. The line that separates one country, state, province, etc., from another; frontier line
The army wasn’t allowed to cross the border of the country.

Chatty: Characterized by friendly and informal talk or writing, often about minor or personal matters. Inclined to chat friendly and talkative.
If you have a lot of work to do and suddenly appears a chatty person it would be annoying.

Edible: fit to be eaten as food; eatable; esculent
You can find around the UCR small restaurants that serve edible food paying a low price.

Studious: disposed or given to diligent study
If you want to be successful in your life you have to be a studious person.

All expenses: all the amounts paid for goods and services that may be currently tax deductible (as opposed to capital expenditures)
I got a new job in which I have to travel around the world all expenses paid.

Self employed: earning one's living directly from one's own profession or business, as a freelance writer or artist, rather than as an employee earning salary or commission from another
One of the benefits of being self employed is that you can manage your time as you want.

To draw up a budget: to compose, to create a budget
I need to draw up a new budget for planning the investments of the next year.

An accountant: a person whose profession is inspecting and auditing personal or commercial accounts
You should find an accountant to put in order all your bills.

At the moment: a definite period or stage, as in a course of events; juncture
She’s busy at the moment but if you wish you can leave a message.

Seconds: usually when a person finishes eating and wants an additional helping of food.
My mother says that having seconds is a lack of education.

To have hiccups: a quick, involuntary inhalation that follows a spasm of the diaphragm and is suddenly checked by closure of the glottis, producing a short, relatively sharp sound.
Trying to speak when you have hiccups is an annoying situation.
